COIL - Collaborative Online International Learning with Manchester Met This credential recognises that the holder has participated in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) through Rise at Manchester Metropolitan University. By engaging in COIL, the holder has taken part in online learning with students from another part of the world, and has collaborated in a multicultural international learning experience.
Take the first step to learning a range of the languages spoken across the World, including French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Explore how language learning can enhance your employability, and the ways in which you can take that learning further. This self study pack will start by presenting the case for learning a language, before giving you a brief introduction to French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. This self study pack caters for people with no (or very limited) prior knowledge of the five languages and who would like to learn and practice some beginner-level words and phrases. This course is a practical introduction to language when working in culturally diverse settings, such as Greater Manchester. The course will provide strategies to support communication and work across language barriers. The course will focus on areas of language and communication such as multilingualism and intercultural communication. We hope your empathy, respect and appreciation towards second language speakers will be heightened throughout this course, as well as establishing ways to ease communication. You will be introduced to one of the languages of Greater Manchester each week. The community languages that the course focuses on are those with the largest number of speakers in Manchester: Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, Bengali, Polish and Panjabi. While language learning is not the main aim of this course, you will be able to gain insights into the languages that people in the Greater Manchester community speak. This course has been co-created by students, academics, experts in language and education, and members of the Greater Manchester community.

Join our Summer challenge to help you feel ready to apply for placements entering second year- many opportunities become live as soon as you come back, and it can feel quite overwhelming. So that’s why we’ve put this challenge in place to help you feel more prepared. As much as some of the larger schemes are live quite early on, not to worry- roles continue to go live throughout the year and leading up to the declaration deadline. Rise is a unique feature of the Manchester Met offer which enables students to gain recognition and credit for engaging with extra-curricula learning. We provide a range of opportunities for students to step out of their subjects and into interdisciplinary topics and themes. Our self-study packs are one significant feature of that offer. They are a catalogue of ‘micro-courses’; independent study packages containing text, video and audio which can be accessed at any time on a self-enrolment basis and completed at whatever pace is most appropriate to the learner. We create self-study packs as open educational resources and make them available to anyone who wants to explore them.Rise works on a points basis; when participants acquire 300 points, they can apply for transcript recognition, and potentially classificatory credits towards their course. Our self-study packs award 40 points towards this.We have also designed our self-study packs so that they can be authored by anyone; staff, students or external partners. The purpose of this course is to introduce potential authors to the approach we take and to guide them through the process of proposal, development and delivery of a self-study pack.Importantly, it also gives authors a flavour of Rise’s signature pedagogy, which will make sure that any content they deliver feels like a Rise activity, and contains elements of personalisation, playful experimentation and application even when focused on knowledge-acquisition.
