Internationalisation

Indigo is one of the world's oldest and most culturally significant dyes. Across continents and cultures, it has been used to colour textiles, communicate identity, mark social status, record histories and express creativity. More than simply a colour, indigo represents a living system of knowledge, connecting people, materials, landscapes and time.

Today, indigo continues to inspire contemporary fashion, textiles and design through conversations around sustainability, craft, repair, material innovation and cultural heritage.

This project invites you to explore indigo as both a material and a cultural phenomenon through an international collaboration with students from LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and RMIT in Melbourne in Australia. Working through the COIL framework, you will exchange research, ideas and feedback with students from a different cultural context, developing a deeper understanding of how materials carry meaning across places, communities and histories.

Rather than attempting to replicate another culture's traditions, you are encouraged to investigate indigo and the colour blue through your own experiences, locality and cultural perspective while learning from the rich textile traditions of Southeast Asia.

This project will run from 27th August to 26th November. During this period you will work independently for the majority of the project. There will be hybrid events during the project and details of these will be provided to successful applicants.

Take the first step to learning a range of the languages spoken across the World, including French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Explore how language learning can enhance your employability, and the ways in which you can take that learning further.

This self study pack will start by presenting the case for learning a language, before giving you a brief introduction to French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. This self study pack caters for people with no (or very limited) prior knowledge of the five languages and who would like to learn and practice some beginner-level words and phrases. At the end, you will also have learnt about the various opportunities that are available to you for learning a language at Manchester Metropolitan University.

This course is a practical introduction to language when working in culturally diverse settings, such as Greater Manchester. The course will provide strategies to support communication and work across language barriers. 

The course will focus on areas of language and communication such as multilingualism and intercultural communication. We hope your empathy, respect and appreciation towards second language speakers will be heightened throughout this course, as well as establishing ways to ease communication. 
 
You will be introduced to one of the languages of Greater Manchester each week. The community languages that the course focuses on are those with the largest number of speakers in Manchester: Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, Bengali, Polish and Panjabi. While language learning is not the main aim of this course, you will be able to gain insights into the languages that people in the Greater Manchester community speak. 

This course has been co-created by students, academics, experts in language and education, and members of the Greater Manchester community.
