Rise is a unique feature of the Manchester Met offer which enables students to gain recognition and credit for engaging with extra-curricula learning. We provide a range of opportunities for students to step out of their subjects and into interdisciplinary topics and themes. Our self-study packs are one significant feature of that offer. They are a catalogue of ‘micro-courses’; independent study packages containing text, video and audio which can be accessed at any time on a self-enrolment basis and completed at whatever pace is most appropriate to the learner. We create self-study packs as open educational resources and make them available to anyone who wants to explore them.Rise works on a points basis; when participants acquire 300 points, they can apply for transcript recognition, and potentially classificatory credits towards their course. Our self-study packs award 40 points towards this.We have also designed our self-study packs so that they can be authored by anyone; staff, students or external partners. The purpose of this course is to introduce potential authors to the approach we take and to guide them through the process of proposal, development and delivery of a self-study pack.Importantly, it also gives authors a flavour of Rise’s signature pedagogy, which will make sure that any content they deliver feels like a Rise activity, and contains elements of personalisation, playful experimentation and application even when focused on knowledge-acquisition.
The GM Reflect eLearning modules have been developed with practitioners and leaders from across the Greater Manchester city region and the Northwest to support schools, colleges and other educational settings in promoting best practices and reflections around inclusive practices. Working with children and families means that you encounter different people with diverse needs. You may play an important role in their lives at a crucial point of their journey when considering how care and education can best support all children. This course will: Develop your understanding of special educational needs and disabilities in the mainstream settings Raise awareness of the importance of inclusive environments and language Explore good practice Build skills and confidence to support pupils and their families as they navigate their education You can study at your own pace, stopping and starting – and the pack will save your progress. There is no deadline for completion and it is free to access. On completion you will be awarded with a digital badge. This eLearning module has been created in collaboration between Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), NW ADCS and Manchester Metropolitan University. This course is aimed at all practitioners within educational settings and is open access and free to use.
Author Bio Laura Negus is a socially engaged ceramicist. She works with community groups and charities, focusing on the positive impact working with clay can have on our wellbeing and mental health. She is experienced in working with volunteers and supporting people through recovery.
