International Negotiation Skills: Model NATO

16th February to 11th March
Gain an understanding of the inner workings of NATO, and develop your skills in international negotiation.

What is Model NATO?

Model NATO is being organised by the British International Studies Association (BISA) in collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This immersive opportunity will enable you to develop your skills in international negotiation and gain and understanding of the workings of NATO.

This opportunity will be of particular interest to students aiming for a career in international organisations, however students from any discipline can submit an expression of interest.

Participation in the Model NATO will increase your awareness of NATO and give you an insight into the challenges of making decisions in a large international organisation. A Model such as this has obvious educational benefits, but it is also meant to be enjoyable and fun. We are confident that the experience of being 'in role', articulating the position of your country and meeting with other delegates, is one that you will find both challenging and inspiring.

"Model NATO provides a unique opportunity for students to study a role, structure, and activities of NATO through a simulation augmented by the support and advice of resident academics, officials and specialists."

Specifically, Model NATO is designed to:

  • Increase awareness of the role, structure and activities of NATO.
  • Highlight major military-security, political, and social issues facing NATO and its member nations.
  • Generate an understanding of the many capabilities and constraints that shape the foreign policies of NATO in determining matters of collective security.
  • Demonstrate the patterns of cooperation and conflict that characterise intra-NATO diplomacy in the search for collective security.
  • Demonstrate the need for cooperative action in an unfolding crisis situation.
  • Develop skills that are transferrable to other settings such as education, employment, and volunteering.

How can I get involved?

15 students will be selected to travel to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London. Your costs of travel, accommodation and one lunch will be covered, providing you an incredibly unique opportunity to travel, broaden your understanding of NATO, and build your Rise portfolio all at once.

To apply for this opportunity please submit a 100 word expression of interest outlining why you would like to take part in Model NATO and how it will support your own development.
