In this sprint you will learn about contraceptive implant.
The implant is a small matchstick sized rod which contains progestogen and is inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. A short procedure is required to insert this but it takes a few minutes and a local anaesthetic is used to reduce any pain.
- The implant lasts for up to 3 years but can be removed before that if the woman wants to become pregnant or if she has any adverse effects that she does not like.
- The implant is extremely effective at preventing a pregnancy.
- Unfortunately many women find that they get unpredictable bleeding with the implant which causes concern. There are ways that this can be improved so women are encouraged to seek help before requesting removal of the implant if this is a problem.
