The importance of physical health

There are important aspects of physical health that should be optimised prior to conception which will improve fertility, the pregnancy and birth, and the health of the baby.  Offering information and knowing where to signpost for further support is an opportunity for all.

OPTIONAL

  • What aspects of physical health can be improved when planning a pregnancy?
  • How can you deliver the important messages in a way that is supportive of women and their extended family?
  • How can you offer support using a trauma-informed approach for those who have suffered previous pregnancy loss?
OPTIONAL

We should support women with information and support with:

  • Healthy diet
  • Reducing caffeine
  • Taking regular physical exercise
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stopping drug and alcohol use
  • Sexual health checks
  • Attending for cervical screening if due or overdue.

There are many useful resources on the NHS website Live Well which provide information to women and their families
