Infant crying

Introduction to ‘Infant crying’

In this sprint you will develop the following knowledge:

  • I understand and can talk to parents about ICON and ways to keep a baby safe:
    • Infant crying is normal, and it will stop.
    • Comfort methods can sometimes soothe the baby and the crying will stop.
    • It’s OK to walk away if you have checked the baby is safe and the crying is getting to you.
    • Never, ever shake or hurt a baby.
  • I can help parents experience the with different ways to soothe and settle their babies.

ICON was conceived following years of study and research into the prevention of Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). The ICON founder, Dr Suzanne Smith PhD, consolidated the study and research to see the prevention programmes in action and to understand more about what makes such programmes a success. https://iconcope.org/

What ICON stands for:

  • Infant crying is normal, and it will stop.
  • Comfort methods can sometimes soothe the baby and the crying will stop.
  • It’s OK to walk away if you have checked the baby is safe and the crying is getting to you.
  • Never, ever shake or hurt a baby.

Research points to persistent crying in babies being a potential trigger for some parents/caregivers to lose control and shake a baby.  It also shows that around 70% of babies who are shaken are shaken by men.  So any prevention programme should include male caregivers and use the best opportunities to reach them as well as support all parents/caregivers with information about crying and how to cope with a crying baby.
