What’s the point?

This page explains the how and why of earning Rise points.

You can earn Rise points by:

  • Self-claiming points
  • Earn points for Rise activities
  • Be awarded points by any Manchester Metropolitan Staff

Earning Rise points lets you:

  • Get recognition and keep track of all the amazing things you
  • Earn Rise digital badges
  • Claim extra credit towards your degree

You can get Rise points for almost anything you do while studying at Manchester Metropolitan. As long as an experience is giving you something valuable to look back on, you can earn points for it. The number of points earned for any activity is worked out by the time you spent doing it and the depth of your involvement. For example, leading a team on a project will give you more points per hour than attending a guest talk.

Let’s explore each of the ways you can get points with the quick summaries below, for more information on these follow the links provided.

Rise isn’t just about the opportunities we provide—it’s about celebrating all the incredible things you do outside of your course too! With our self-claim process, you can turn your independent efforts into points that can enhance your degree profile.

Whether it’s volunteering, work experience, independent projects, or self-study, your efforts matter! Rise allows you to claim points for activities that are valuable to your personal and professional growth but aren’t formally part of your course.

All activities delivered through Rise earn you points. These points will usually be awarded automatically when you scan a QR code to register your attendance, or on completing a self-study pack. Sometimes staff might award points manually or in rare cases an event might ask you to self-claim for attending an activity. If you aren’t sure if you’ve earned points the first thing to do is check your Rise Transcript here. If you think you’re missing points contact the event organising to check but remember it can take up to to a week for points to appear.

Why not get started right now and look at our calendar of upcoming events?

All Manchester Metropolitan staff can award you Rise points for your co-curricular activities. If you’re helping out with anything like research projects, exhibitions, or supporting your peers you can ask the staff member you are working with if they can award you points and give you the recognition your work deserves!

So you’ve earned lots of points and gained lots of great experience, what now? Rise points do the following things for you:

One of the hard parts of writing your personal statement or CV can be trying to remember all the amazing things you’ve done, especially if they were a few years ago! Everything you do that earns points goes on your Rise Transcript. You can use this as a handy record to log everything you do, and then when it comes to building your CV you can easily remind yourself about that course or certificate you did in your first year. As an added bonus 150 Rise Points grants you transcript recognition, an extra line on your degree transcript that demonstrates the additional effort you’ve made.

Rise badges give you an extra way to get recognised and show off your achievements. The main purpose of Rise badges is to give you milestones to aim towards as you engage with Rise. You earn badges by earning enough points in a particular theme (e.g. Digital, International, Personal Effectiveness, Sustainability). To earn the higher tier badges these points also need to come from activities with higher levels of engagement. For example you can’t get a gold badge by completing self-study alone. You need to get out there and apply your knowledge to a project or use it to have an impact through volunteering. The table below gives a brief overview of how to earn badges and you can find out more in the this article on badges.

Badge levelTotal points neededPoint requirements
Bronze75Anything!
Silver150At least 50 points from an activities that involves interacting with other people (attending talks, workshops, etc.)
Gold300At least 100 points from an activities that involves application of your knowledge (it could be an internship, project work, etc.)

If this all sounds a little confusing, don’t worry! Every activity shows you what kind of badge it contributes to. If you aren’t sure, the best thing to do is to start earning points and you’ll find the badges appear!

To get the most value from your badges share them out out there on your socials. This handy guide explains the best way to share your Rise achievements.

The final thing you can do with your Rise points is turn them into academic credit. The ability to turn your co-curricular achievements into academic credit is something special that Manchester Metropolitan (and not many other universities!) offers you. To be eligible to claim Rise academic credits you need to meet three requirements:

  • Earn 300 points: These can be from any activities or experiences, as long as you have at least 300 points in total.
  • Be studying on an eligible course: Unfortunately, not all courses have space in them for extra Rise credits. You can check your pattern of eligibility by following this link.

If you meet these requirements you can convert your Rise points to credit through completion of the Rise assessment. This is a reflective piece of work that asks you to look back on your experiences and explore the learning and value you gained from them. To find out everything you need to know about the Rise Assessment head over to our assessment page and browse all the resources there.

That’s it! Now get out there and start earning Rise points!
