Rise Assessment – Telling Your Story

Camila Torres Rise Communications and Student Engagement

Stories are a powerful way to reflect on key moments of development. They allow you to articulate and evaluate experiences that have shaped your journey, highlighting moments of growth, learning, and transformation. Through storytelling, you can showcase the value of the opportunities you’ve engaged with. This is why Rise invites you to tell your story through our assessment.

The Rise Assessment is different from other academic assessments you may encounter at Manchester Met. It’s optional, flexible, and creative (if that suits you), focusing entirely on YOUR journey with our programme, incorporating reflections on the value of your experiences.

We’re not asking you to recount your entire Rise experience from start to finish. Instead, we encourage you to select key moments that were particularly powerful or transformative—instances where your growth and development were most evident. Once you identify these experiences, reflect on their impact and significance.

Your submission can be as straightforward as a written piece or as creative as a short film, podcast, website, game, or a piece of artwork. As long as your chosen medium effectively conveys your story, you’re welcome to explore creative approaches.

What Is It For?

The Rise Assessment is an over-credit unit that can improve your overall grade. If your Rise Assessment score is higher than one of your optional unit grades, it’ll replace the lower grade and count towards your degree classification.

For more details on how the Rise Assessment affects your degree and what over-crediting means, visit our Assessment Page and our Assessment Guidance Self Study Pack

Are You Eligible?

You can quickly check your eligibility across your entire degree programme by visiting our Assessment Page. Here, you’ll find a breakdown of your eligibility and when, which could help you plan your engagement with Rise. Just make sure you are logged into our site first!

What If You’re Not Eligible?

Don’t worry! You can still enhance your Degree Transcript through Rise. For every 150 Rise Points you earn during your degree, you’ll automatically gain transcript recognition. On your final degree transcript, we’ll include ‘practice credits,’ which doesn’t count towards your overall degree grade but highlights the additional efforts you’ve put into the Rise programme.

Should You Do It?

Before deciding whether to undertake the Rise Assessment, here are a few key factors to consider.

The first thing to note is that the Rise Assessment is a significant commitment. Like any other assessment, it requires you to meet specific Learning Outcomes and adhere to a Marking Criteria. You’ll need time to research, draft, and refine your submission to ensure it’s the best version it can be.

Second, assess whether the Rise Assessment aligns with your academic strategy. If your optional unit grades are already strong, submitting the assessment may not significantly impact your degree classification, since there is a possibility it won’t get to replace any of your units.

Timing is also essential. Even if you achieve the 300 Rise Points required for eligibility in your first year, it might be better for you to submit the assessment in your second or even third year. You might want to consider your coursework load, the difficulty of your classes, and the time you’d be able to dedicate to this, so that you can really make the most out of the benefits of the Rise Assessment.

The Rise Assessment isn’t for everyone—and that’s perfectly fine!

The value of Rise and your involvement in our programme goes beyond submitting an assessment. The true value lies in the real-life experiences, new knowledge, and connections you’ve made—whether academic, professional, or personal.

So, please don’t feel discouraged if you aren’t able to submit the assessment. Your journey with Rise is valuable, no matter what!
