Create a sustainable online society!
Every action we take part in or product we buy has a carbon cost.
You might be aware of this concept when you make day-to-day choices on what transport to use or what food you eat. However, have you ever considered the environmental cost of everything you do online? How much carbon is emitted by taking a photo, sharing a gif, or posting on social media? Or have you thought about the environmental impacts of that new phone you just bought? Would thinking about this change your mind on buying a new device?
All of our online activities and tech purchases add up to a relatively large carbon and environmental cost! On a positive note its very easy to reduce these costs by taking simple actions like deleting our old files and photos from the cloud, or using repaired or reconditioned tech instead of buying new!
This project gives you a space and a team to have a positive impact on the digital world of Manchester Met by investigating the environmental impact of digital habits and considering how we might raise awareness and take action to work towards a net-zero future.
This project is designed to be open and to give you a platform to develop your own ideas. Below are some starting prompts that might help you picture the kind of thing you could work on:
- Create a How to be sustainable online information pack for staff and students at Man Met
- Create a digital carbon footprint calculator to raise awareness of the carbon cost of digital habits
- Tackle E-waste on campus by setting up a scheme or group to repair or repurpose old tech
