Study in China Opportunity Shortlist

1st July to 27th July
An opportunity to be considered for the shortlist for our 4-week Turing Scheme funded study exchange on the Beijing Institute of Technology Summer School from 1 - 27 July 2024. This is an offer for undergraduate students currently in Level 4 (first year) and Level 5 (second year) only.

Experience of other cultures and global society is a great way to help you to develop personally, academically and professionally. Research into the benefits of study or work abroad reports a positive impact on career and academic outcomes. International experiences, whether these are physical trips abroad or virtual collaborations with students or organisations in other countries, are a great way to take you out of your comfort zone, help you build confidence and resilience, teamwork and collaborative skill, whilst developing a sense of independence and responsibility.

Have you ever considered studying abroad in China? Here is an opportunity for you to ‘dip your toe in the water’ and study abroad for a short 4-week period on an approved short-term student exchange at the Beijing Institute of Technology from 1 – 27 July 2024.

Please see the Beijing Institute of Technology summer school brochure for full details of the programmes on offer.

There are up to 10 summer school places available offering:

  • Free tuition
  • Free accommodation
  • A Turing Scheme grant of £480 to help towards the cost of living
  • Free University travel insurance

Up to £1000 in additional Turing Scheme funding is available to home undergraduate students who meet the Turing Scheme criteria for disadvantage. Students who meet the Turing Scheme criteria for disadvantage will be prioritised in the allocation of funding for this opportunity.

When considering applying for this opportunity, we would recommend that you check that you have a valid passport and research the cost of travel, accommodation and living expenses in-country. Costs associated with this opportunity include: international travel, transportation, visa, optional activities, food and other living costs. The funding provided will contribute towards your travel and living costs, but may not cover all costs. Typically, £1000 should cover the cost of a return flight and a visa but you will need to check costs according to your own travel needs. You will also need to think about food and any other expenses whilst you are away.

More detailed information on the costs associated with living abroad is available here:

We anticipate high demand for this opportunity and competition for places.

How to apply

Please submit your expression of interest (max 300 words) by Tuesday 19th March 2024.

If you are accepted onto the shortlist, you will receive an “accept” message and you will then have 48 hours to accept the offer to be a shortlisted candidate.

Short-listed candidates will then be invited for a conversation with a member of the Study Abroad and Exchange team via Teams as part of the formal selection process for this opportunity. This will take place on Friday 22nd March 2024 and is a mandatory part of the selection process.

If you are successful, we will then support you through the steps needed to take up the opportunity.

As part of the selection, we will consider:

  • Your Expression of interest
  • Your Engagement with your programme of study (including any grades to date)
  • Whether you would be eligible for additional Turing Scheme funding

In your expression of interest, you should:

  • explain your motivation for studying abroad at the Beijing Institute of Technology and how you expect this to impact your future
  • outline any personal qualities and skills you would like to develop
  • explain how the Turing Scheme funding would help you to study abroad

Further advice for your expression of interest: Students who study abroad develop a skillset that are valued by employers. There are also skills and qualities that are useful to develop in order to facilitate a successful experience.

  1. Motivation: By living abroad, you will be taken outside of your comfort zone and may face a range of different challenges during your study abroad journey. Key skills and qualities include resilience, organisation, flexibility and patience. A positive attitude and commitment to success is important. To be selected on this programme, you need to demonstrate commitment to getting the most of your experience. You will experience a different way of life whilst overseas, and you will need to deal with this with a positive attitude and pragmatism, whilst taking responsibility for your own success.
  2. Developing yourself: Studying abroad provides a great opportunity to develop yourself personally, culturally, and academically. What will you do to make the most of your experience to achieve your study abroad goals? How will Turing Scheme funding help you to achieve your goals.
