Remote Technology Co-Design Workshops

22nd November to 29th November
The accelerated use of digital and remote tools such as Miro, Slack, Figma and other platforms through the Covid-19 period changed design industry practices and how we engaged with learning on our courses. This project will collate our experiences of using such technologies, and discuss how they may continue to be usefully in supporting learning.

The augmentation of teaching through the Covid-19 period utilized many digital and remote tools, such as Miro, Slack, Figma, Teams, all expanding the toolkit of how we engaged with learning on our courses. The period revealed issues surrounding inequalities in learning and digital poverty, but it also promoted the discussion of new ways to innovate teaching, Through two scheduled workshops this project aims to collate our experiences of using digital and remote technologies, discuss how we feel they can best support learning and to co-design strategies for how we can develop an inclusive framework for the application of digital technologies that everyone may benefit from.

The project aims to engage students from across the design dept, with a broad range of representation. The workshops will be timebound and structured to enable experiences and ideas to be fully captured. Feedback and constructive dialogue with students is vitally important in continuing to develop an understanding of how, when and where learning happens. This project will be of intertest and benefit to anyone concerned with how we might best use digital and remote technologies in developing design education.

The project will be delivered over two workshops, split into key phases of Discovery and Co-Design;

Discovery: An initial 1.5 hour workshop that reflects upon the variety of experiences and practices developed through using remote learning technologies. This will involve sharing experiences with other students from across the design dept and exploring how different courses have adopted specific approaches to using remote technologies.

Co-Design: A follow up 1.5 hour workshop activity to evaluate and synthesis the experiences discussed in the Discovery workshop, developing a collection of ‘most preferred’ approaches, leading to the creation of an inclusive and coherent proposition for the most beneficial applications of remote technologies to support learning on our courses.
