MRI Research Project - Jaw and Tongue Anatomy

1st November to 31st May
This project gives you the exciting opportunity to learn more about MRI Scanning. You will have to acquire MRI images and process them to understand the relationship between jaw anatomy and tongue/oral cavity anatomy. You will be provided with guidance and training on the use of MRI technology and images.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. During this project you will work through the following steps as part of a team of fellow students to acquire and analyse MRI data.

Acquisition: Your team will collect MRI data on a target population.

Processing: You will segment the jaw region MRI data to create 3D CAD models (Solidworks) of the tongue and oral cavity.

Results: You will perform statistical analysis to understand the relationship between anatomical features.

Your team will receive support/guidelines/training from the supervisory team and the technical team in charge of the MRI machine.

Your team work will be part of a wider research project aiming at providing new diagnostic tools for neurogenic dysphagia, which is a type of swallowing disorder.

Associated Badges:

In A Nutshell...

  • Collaborate...this project is in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research group.
  • Upskill...in handling MRI data. You will learn to segment and process MRI data.
  • Gain experience... in physiology and biomedical engineering and insights into this field as a career path..
  • Work as a team...with students from different disciplines to achieve your goals.
  • Earn up to 300 Rise points ... which can be recognised within your degree.

Schedule

  • call_split 01/11/23 to 15/02/24
    MRI acquisition
During this time frame you will recruit some participants to collect some MRI images.
  • call_split 21/02/24 to 29/04/24
    Image Processing
During this activity the students will have to process the data. Some training will provided so that you will be able to work independently
  • call_split 29/04/24 to 31/05/24
    Results and interpretation
You will have to process the results and interpret them. This activity will be independent and will help you to develop critical thinking.
