Introduction in to Spinning Yarn with a drop spindle

22nd January 10:00 to 12:30
This session will cover how to take fibers and spin the into yarn using a drop spindle
This activity is offered as part of Future Me Week - five days of exciting opportunities to develop your skills, deepen understanding, gain experience and take steps towards an exciting Future You.

Spinning is a twisting technique to form yarn from fibers. The fiber intended is drawn out, twisted, and wound onto a bobbin. The history of spinning is vast, and spans thousands of years along with dozens of iterations of spinning tools. A Drop spindle is a straight shaft usually made from wood used for spinning, twisting fibres such as wool, flax, hemp, cotton into yarn. It is often weighted at either the bottom or top, commonly by a disc or spherical object called a whorl.

This session will cover how to use a drop spindle to create your own yarn and the different types of fibers there are. All materials will be provided.
