Dept. Social Care & Social Work Black, Asian and ethnically diverse student network

22nd February 18:00 to 19:00
The next Department of Social Care and Social Work's Black, Asian and ethnically diverse student network is on Thursday 22nd February 2024 at 6pm online and we will be talking about 'code switching' and how this is relevant to social work and social care.

If you like, listen to this episode on code-switching before this session. It is predominantly relating to people from Caribbean and African ethnic backgrounds but the concept can apply to anyone.

‘Code-switching, process of shifting from one linguistic code (a language or dialect) to another, depending on the social context or conversational setting. Sociolinguists, social psychologists, and identity researchers are interested in the ways in which code-switching, particularly by members of minority ethnic groups, is used to shape and maintain a sense of identity and a sense of belonging to a larger community’ (Britannica, 2024).
