Culture and Context: C19th Art in a C19th Museum for the C21st Century

24th April 10:00 to 12:00
Visit the Manchester Art Gallery with the Long C19th Network and expert guest Laurence Rousillon-Constanty, Professor of British Literature & Aesthetics at the University of Pau, France. The MAG Fine Art Curator Hannah Williamson will welcome us to explore MAG’s C19th collection together, discussing art, culture & the role of museums then and now.

Come and explore nineteenth century culture through its art. We will think about cultural movements (especially the Pre-Raphaelites and Arts & Crafts), how they reflect their own time and how they relate to our present. We will also try to envisage how these works might be viewed in the future. This is planned as a relaxing group conversation as we look at art and think about the role of museums together. It is targeted at students of art, curating, English and history, but is open to any students with a love of art and/or the long nineteenth century.

We will meet inside the main entrance of Manchester Art Gallery at 10 am on Wednesday 24th April. Our visit opens with a welcome from the Curator of Fine Art, Hannah Williamson, and a brief contextualising introduction by Dr Rachel Dickinson (Reader in English and Interdisciplinary Studies, Man Met) and Prof Laurence Rousillon-Constanty (Prof of English and Aesthetics, University of Pau). Then we will explore the museum together, pausing to discuss some of our favourite items (and ones you suggest too!). The session will end by 12 noon.

This is one half of a full day of activity. If your schedule allows, please join us for the second half (and additional RISE points) at ‘Precarity, Publishing, and Progress: A Seminar on Nineteenth-Century Women Writersthe Spring North-West Long Nineteenth Century Research Seminar from 3-5 in GM LT5. Further details in the RISE listing here, these papers will be of particular interest to students of English, Fashion, History and Publishing, as well as anyone with a passion for the nineteenth century, travel writing and/or women’s studies.
