Access to Justice: Problems and Solutions (Manchester Law School)

23rd January to 25th January
Who gets justice? In this activity we will learn about some of the issues with access to justice for different people and how we can overcome the barriers. You will work in teams to identify the problems, suggest solutions and present your findings in a short video that will be discussed by a panel of experts.
This activity is offered as part of Future Me Week - five days of exciting opportunities to develop your skills, deepen understanding, gain experience and take steps towards an exciting Future You.

Access to Justice is one of the biggest challenges facing the law today. In this activity you will encounter some of the issues head on and come up with your own ideas to improve access to justice and create a fairer society.

In the first session you learn about some of the issues connected with access to justice. You will then be split into groups and given a scenario. The scenario will provide you with the details of a (fictitious) case involving a person who needs legal assistance. Your task will be to identify the barriers to justice the person faces. These barriers could be financial, geographical, political, legal or another hindrance. You will then think of ways that this barrier can be overcome or even removed. How could the law or society be organised so that everyone has access to justice? This will require both research and creative thinking skills.

Once you have identified the issues and considered a plan of action to solve the problem you will relay this in a short video. The video can take any form you want and the more creative and impactful the better. This is a chance for you show off your creative and critical thinking skills.

In the second session a panel of legal experts will discuss the findings of the videos and any issues raised. This will give you the opportunity to hear from leading lawyers and for you to ask questions based on what you have discovered. It will be informative, entertaining and useful for you in your career development.
