Multi-Lingual judges required for the mother tongue other tongue poetry competition!

30th May to 14th July
This is an opportunity for students who are multi-lingual or who are learning another language, or with an interest in poetry in other languages, to be judges for this year’s Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition for 8-18 year olds.

Entries in both categories – Mother Tongue (poetry in a home language, judged on the basis of a commentary written in English) and Other Tongue (an opportunity for children to be creative in a language that they are learning) are currently being submitted. Judging will begin on 30th May, after the competition deadline has passed.

We are looking for 4-6 people with a genuine interest in poetry and languages, who can spend time w/c 30th May reading entries from 8-18 year olds and, with a panel of other student judges, decide which pieces will be included in the 10th anniversary anthology of this Queen’s Award winning project.

Timeline:

  • w/c 30th May – briefing of judging panel and entries shared for review – can be done remotely and entries shared between panellists, so approx. one or two days reading required.
  • w/c 6th June – sharing of judging comments via online meetings with other judges to discuss decisions and agree winners (one or two 2 hour meetings will be required this week)
  • w/c 13th June – selection of pieces for anthology and compilation/checking/editing. Possibly 1 or 2 half days – the majority of this work will be undertaken by an intern, so this is by discussion and optional.
  • 14th July schools celebration event on 14th July that you would be invited to attend.

Hours expected:

Total hours would be approx. (2 days reading/judging – 14 hours) + (4 additional half days for meetings etc – 14 hours) and optional attendance at July 14th celebration event (half day) – so approx. 32 hours in total

Please apply, with a brief paragraph, giving details of your own language story, why you would like to be included on the judging panel and any relevant experience.
