Post-civil war demobilisation practices: Comparative perspectives

23rd May to 13th June
Civil wars are multi-layered and particularly violent events that lead to complex and highly politicised demobilisation processes. This project explores the demobilization process that took place in Spain, Greece, Italy, and Yugoslavia in the 1940s to shed light on demobilisation practices and their impact over post-war structures of power.

Host Researcher: Dr Mercedes Penalba-Sotorrio

By participating in this project, you will help produce an annotated bibliography and identify gaps in the literature. You will make use of key academic databases as well as specialised software such as Zotero and RefWorks. You will also learn to apply skim reading skills to identify key information, as well as to organise the information collected thematically.

You will also be given the opportunity to write a blog post for the War, Conflict and Society Research Group website on the case study of your choice. This is not a mandatory part of the internship, but it will provide you with valuable research, writing, and publishing experience that you will be able to highlight in your cv.

Students are required to complete the Key Research Skills Rise Intensive prior to engaging in this activity.

Students interested in the social, cultural and political history of war, as well as those keen to try their hand at comparative research methods are particularly encouraged to apply.

Speaking languages other than English is not necessary, but knowledge of Spanish, Italian or Greek will be welcome.
