Mapping Black Spaces in the City
Black Poetics of Space is a community-based project that engages young people in spatial and creative practices around the neighbourhoods of Hulme and Moss Side.

Black Poetics of Space is a community-based project that engages young people in spatial and creative practices around the neighbourhoods of Hulme and Moss Side.
It aims to use creative practices of mapping, scanning, video-making to explore and familiarise with histories and geographies of Afro-Caribbean presence in the city, in spaces where these stories seem to have been erased or are difficult to perceive.
Students participating in this workshop will have the opportunity to use technology like Go Pro cameras, lidar cameras, scanning apps, air sensors, and rare historic maps.
This is a project that will be of interest for global majority students with curiosity for community and environmental work, anti-racism and anti-blackness.
Students who have attended the course will have the option to participate in the design and delivery of a walking-tour during the Community Learning Festival that is celebrated every year at the Brooks building in the later weeks of July.
This project is part of a university funded study. Students participating in the course would be informed on the study activities and ethics, and they will be asked for consent.
The course will take place on March 24, March 31st, April 7th and April 28th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
If you choose to participate and lead a walk in the Community Learning Festival in late July 2022, you will need to attend an additional session on May to organise the event.

Interest to diversity, equality, and social justice work:The course is of special interest for global majority students committed to community and environmental work, anti-racism and anti-blackness.
Professionalism:You are required to attend all the sessions otherwise you won’t be able to perform and participate at the expected level.
Creativity:This is a co-produced project. You will be asked to lead specific tasks in the different activities. The success of the activities will depend of your creativity and leadership.
In A Nutshell...
- Become community oriented... learn more about the history and community spaces surrounding campus and university life.
- Gain hands on experience... working on as a tour lead at the Community Learning Festival.
- Use new equipment... Operate Go-Pro cameras, Lidar cameras and air sensors.
- Receive mentorship... from experts including map archivist, historian and artists-educators
- Improve your CV... add that you have acted as a co-researcher in a university funded project.
- Receive full training... don’t worry if you don’t have experience, or you are not from an arts background we will train you, and you can shadow others who do have experience.
- Earn up to 150 Rise points ... which can be recognised within your degree.
