Deaf signing populations and mental health / health disparities

My presentation will address the existing evidence of the inequalities in healthcare and health outcomes faced by Deaf signing populations, considering the current knowledge of health and mental wellbeing outcomes. Mental health and health related services often do not have the tools they need to accurately assess a culturally Deaf person’s mental state. Adaption of standardised assessments for use with sign language populations require several stages of verification. Stage one focuses on the translation and reliability testing in order to establish first level validity. Stage two considers the performance of the instruments to the target population, including verification of the clinical cut-offs. Stage three evaluates the effectiveness of their use in practice depending on clinical conditions of delivery. This presentation presents evidence from research addressing each stage, including lessons learned in the adaption, validation and effectiveness testing of the standardised assessments with Deaf signers.

Dr Katherine Rogers is a Senior Lecturer and National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Manchester. She co-leads the Social Research with Deaf people (SORD) research group (https://sites.manchester.ac.uk/sord/) at the University of Manchester. Her main research interests are health and mental health in the Deaf communities. Examples of research projects that she has been involved with include the mental well-being and health of Deaf people, evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of services, and the validation of standardised psychometric instruments with Deaf populations.
