We’ve Always Been Here - LGBTQIA+ History Month Zine Creation Workshop

26th February 10:00 to 12:00
Create your own mini zine inspired by LGBTQIA+ history, identity, and resistance. This session is open to all; you do not need to identify as LGBTQIA+ or share anything personal unless you want to. No experience needed, just cut, paste, reflect, and take your zine home!

The workshop is open to all students and there is no requirement to identify as LGBTQIA+ or disclose personal experiences.

This LGBTQIA+ History Month zine making workshop is a creative in person session where you can explore LGBTQIA+ history identity and resistance through hands on making. The event is co hosted by Jayne Mugglestone and Rachel O’Sullivan Senior Lecturers and Co-Chairs of the Staff Rainbow Network.

Rachel & Jayne bring academic expertise and equality focussed practice to create a welcoming and supportive space. This workshop is open to everyone and you do not need to identify as LGBTQIA+ or share anything personal to take part.

During the workshop you will be introduced to zines as a form of independent publishing that has been widely used within LGBTQIA+ communities to share stories, challenge dominant narratives, and build connection. You will create your own mini zine using a range of materials and be guided by prompts inspired by LGBTQIA+ history including key moments in activism and local/UK based stories.

You can engage in whatever way feels right for you, whether that’s creative experimentation responding to history or personal reflection and you will be encouraged to work at your own pace in a relaxed and non-judgemental environment. No previous creative or zine making experience is needed!

By the end of the session you will have created a completed mini zine to take away which you can keep share with others or include as part of a creative or reflective portfolio. The workshop gives you the chance to develop creativity, cultural awareness, and confidence while engaging with LGBTQIA+ History Month in a meaningful and practical way.
