From sending a relatable tikTok to your friend’s groupchat to watching the latest show on your favorite streaming service. All of our digital activities have a bigger impact on climate change than we realize. But how exactly does that happen, and more importantly, what can we do about it?
As part of Manchester Metropolitan University’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we are hosting a webinar, alongside the Royal University of Fine Arts Cambodia on digital sustainability delivered by Ian Chan, Founder & CEO of Greenie Web. Ian is the driving force behind the “28 to 28 Programme: Digital Sustainability for the 21st Century”, an initiative inspired by the UN sustainability agenda and COP summits.
This webinar aims to highlight the often overlooked carbon emissions generated by digital activity and provide actionable solutions for reducing digital footprints. Ian’s work has gained global recognition, he was featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 (Social Impact), and his insights are helping businesses and institutions adopt more sustainable digital practices. His startup, Greenie Web, is a pioneer in digital decarbonization, having developed the world’s first Digital Carbon Emissions Calculator and Rectifier, a groundbreaking solution that enables organizations and individuals to measure and reduce their digital carbon footprint.
This webinar was brought to Manchester Metropolitan and will be hosted by Amal Essebaiy, a final-year Politics students.
From Amal:
I’ve always been deeply concerned about climate change and have taken part in many initiatives over the years, but I had never really stopped to consider the environmental cost of our digital habits. Learning about the carbon impact of our online world, and more importantly, the solutions being developed to address it, was eye-opening. I felt an immediate need to share this with other students who, like me, might not have been aware. But beyond just awareness, I believe it’s essential for us to understand the emerging technologies and key sustainability challenges shaping industries today. Being informed means being prepared for the future—and that’s why I wanted to bring this conversation to our university
