Visual methods in psychology: The case for innovation and creative research methods for impactful research

Qualitative research in psychology is dominated by interviews and focus groups. However, in some instances, these methods may not fully address a particular research question or enable researchers to understand participants’ perspectives. Increasingly, psychological researchers have supplemented interviews and observations with creative and visual methods from other disciplines, including the arts, visual anthropology and cultural geography. This interdisciplinary approach can empower participants, diversify research dissemination opportunities and reduce dependency on the written and spoken word. Visual methods using photography, video, drawing (and others) can enhance the methodological repertoire of psychological researchers who are interested in topics ranging from health, behaviour change, wellbeing, culture, sport, the working environment and a range of other everyday experiences. In this seminar we will discuss our experiences of using visual methods to understand chronic pain in endometriosis, acculturation, psychological resilience, human-animal interaction and place-making. We will discuss benefits, challenges, and opportunities of applying these methods to other areas of psychology. The aim of the session is to; (i) introduce participants to a range of visual methods in psychology; (ii) consider how visual methods can be used to supplement traditional qualitative interviews (iii) discuss the practical and technical challenges for using visual methods
