NHS Blood and Transplant Transfusion lab training project - Virtual reality and laboratory

24th January 10:00 to 16:00
As part of a wider research project, staff working for NHS Blood and transplant will be offering training in hospital laboratory transfusion crossmatching. You will randomly allocated to a laboratory or virtual reality training group.

Participants are required for a MSc research project looking into the use of virtual reality (VR) to see if it can help improve training outcomes for scientists working in NHS Transfusion Laboratories, in particular the research is based on training to perform ABO and D blood grouping for patients. This is one of the most important tests conducted in transfusion laboratories, and directly affects patient treatment.

Participants will take part in a study where they will be randomly allocated into one of two groups. One trained by VR and one trained by traditional laboratory training methods. No prior experience in transfusion is required to take part in this study. As VR is a new concept in training transfusion healthcare scientists, the aim of this study is to see if VR can be used to improve knowledge and practical skills in this area. We are also aiming to compare the training outcomes between traditional training methods and training by VR.
