Gaming, Blaming and Shaming: Online harm and safeguarding in the digital age.
As part of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Future Me Week, external organisation, Minus Violence will deliver a thought-provoking workshop titled “Gaming, Blaming & Shaming” which will delve into the complex world of online harm and safeguarding in the digital age.
Aimed at HE students in social work, youth work, criminology, and social care but relevant to students from across all disciplines, this session will explore the evolving challenges and ethical dilemmas surrounding online safety, particularly with the advent of AI, advanced gaming technology, and the rise of streaming platforms.
Students will examine the historical context of online harm, analyse current trends in cyberbullying, radicalization, and exploitation, and discuss future implications for safeguarding vulnerable individuals in the digital landscape. The workshop will encourage critical thinking and equip future professionals with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of online safety and promote responsible digital citizenship.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify emerging online risks and their impact on young people’s well-being.
- Analyze the specific challenges posed by AI, gaming technology, and streaming platforms in relation to online harm.
- Apply critical thinking and ethical reasoning to develop effective safeguarding strategies.
- Evaluate the role of their future occupations to empowering young people to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly.
