Society & Change Saturday Club Co-facilitators
The History, Politics and Philosophy Department at Manchester Metropolitan University runs a trailblazing Society & Change Saturday Club that encourages young people to explore a range of critical issues that affect society and how we live, both in the past and in the present day. Every Saturday 10.30am-1.30pm, we meet to discuss the big issues in the world. At the Club, you can volunteer as a co-facilitator for a minimum of 3 sessions over 16-weeks to work with young people and help them to explore evidence, think critically, and argue persuasively – key life skills that help them to express themselves and their ideas! Themes will include a range of important topics like challenging race and racism, exploring migration, gender equality, and tackling social inequalities. You’ll help young people develop their detective skills as budding historians, using old newspapers, personal stories, films, videos, and even games to uncover and engage with these big issues.
The Club programme is packed with exciting activities and amazing guest speakers – club members will create social protest banners, videos, and board games, and explore topics like racism and sexism in sport – learn about iconic figures like Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all time, and discover inspiring local women in football.
Sessions will include trips to places like the National Football Museum, International Slavery Museum, and even have a joint session with the Muhammad Ali Museum. Club members also take part in national events including the Summer Show, where Saturday Clubs nationwide exhibit their work in a public exhibition – all for free!
The sessions are run by two brilliant club tutors, who are friendly, knowledgeable, and fun! You’ll work with them to provide a fun, action packed and creative club that inspires school students to tackle the big issues in the world by being a change maker yourself. If you’d love to gain work experience, and to gain RISE points in the process, sign up! You won’t regret it!
What does it mean to be a co-facilitator?
Becoming a Saturday Club Co-Facilitator means you will learn how to develop skills around the delivery of workshops.
You will then support a lead Club Tutor to run sessions and support a group of 13-16 year olds on Saturdays, on campus, in a discipline area of your choice.
What is Saturday Club?
The National Saturday Club is a network of subject specialist clubs for young people, they run all over the country and offer 13-16 year olds free workshops in a subject of their choice.
Manchester Metropolitan has a long history of running Saturday Clubs, starting to deliver the Art & Design club 8 years ago. This year we are embarking on an exciting adventure and will be running 6 clubs in one year. We need students like you to come and support the delivery, bring your wonderful personalities and varied interests, and show young people what it is like to live in Manchester and attend a vibrant university like Manchester Met.
Whether you have experience working with children and young people, or are just interested in the subjects on offer, or like the idea of learning to facilitate workshops, we want to hear from you. Send us an expression of interest, tell us about yourself, your experience, and what you study.
