Lee Kai Hung International Travel Award (This opportunity is for Science and Engineering)

6th February to 13th July
An opportunity join forces with students from our Joint Education Institute at Hubei University in Wuhan, China to complete a collaborative project on either the Hubei University Smart Building Project or the Sony Student Development Content initiative - culminating in a 4-week Summer School at Hubei University, China in June 2025.

This opportunity is open to first, second and third year students from Software Engineering, EEE, and Chemistry undergraduate programmes at ManMet.

What you will be doing

This is a 5-month project that involves working collaboratively with students from our Joint Education Institute in person at Manchester Met, online and in person in Wuhan China.

You will be working on one of two high-impact projects:

1) Smart Building Project

Part of Hubei University’s funded initiative, “Construction of a Practical Teaching System of ‘Three Crosses and Three Integrations’ under the Sino-Foreign Cooperation Model.” This project focuses on cutting-edge solutions for future-ready smart buildings.

2) Sony Project

Students will collaborate with ManMet’s EEE team to contribute to the Sony Student Development Content initiative. For more information, see the winners of the 2023/24 contest here:  Here are the winners of the 3rd edition of the Student Developer Contest | Developer World (sony.com)

When it will take place

6th  – 15th  Feb 2025: Project launch – you will participate in the Joint Education Institute Winter School at Manchester Met to meet students from the Joint Education Institute and start project work. This will involve 8-10 hours of activity.

March – May 2025: You will continue to collaborate with your project partners online to further develop your projects – 2 hours per week across 8 weeks of activity.

15 June 2025 – 13 July 2025: You will travel to China to attend a 4-week Summer School at Hubei University, China.

Key activities of the Hubei University Summer School include:

Chinese Language Course: Tailored beginner-level courses.

Culture Immersion: Introductory sessions on Chinese culture and organized trips to significant cultural sites.

Industry Engagement: Visits to leading local industrial partners for a first-hand understanding of China’s technological landscape.

Collaborative Projects: Continuing to work alongside the Joint Education Institute Winter School participants on ongoing projects such as the Smart Building initiative or Sony collaborations.

Students who successfully complete the Manchester and online elements of the programme will be eligible to participate in the Hubei University Summer School and will receive:

  • a £1000 Lee Kai Hung International Mobility award
  • free accommodation at Hubei University
  • free tuition at Hubei University
  • free cultural excursions at Hubei University
  • free University canteen card preloaded with a daily allowance for meals at the university canteen

How to Apply

Please submit your expression of interest (max. 300 words) by Wednesday 1 January 2025. 

In your expression of interest, you should: 

  • explain your motivation for participating in the programme and how you expect this to impact your future 
  • outline any personal qualities and skills you would like to develop – this could be personally, academically or professionally 
  • explain how the Lee Kai Hung funding would help you to study abroad 

As part of the selection, we will consider: 

  • Your expression of interest 
  • Your engagement with your programme of study (including any grades to date) 

Short-listed candidates will then be invited for a conversation with a member of the short-listing panel. We expect this to take place in January. 

There are 30 funded places available. Priority will be given to students in the second year of undergraduate study.

If you are successful, we will then support you through the steps needed to take up the opportunity.
