Here, I Am Whole – Celebrating disability stories through zine-making
As part of the It Started With A Seed Festival, poet and artist Quen Took has been commissioned to run a series of zine-making workshops for staff, students, and alumni.
Quen hopes to encourage disabled members of the Man Met community to take charge of their own narratives and tell stories that are sometimes overlooked. These zine workshops are designed to entice you to tell your own MMU stories about your experiences as a member of the disabled community here at Man Met.
This brief is extremely open to interpretation, and you may find you are inspired by objects, places, people, or concepts. Zine-making materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own supplies.
You may be a seasoned zine-maker, or a complete novice – all are welcome. Quen will be teaching some basic zine-making techniques and is on-hand to assist with your creations.
If you choose, your zine will be exhibited at Manchester Central Library as part of the Manchester Histories Festival, along with Quen’s commissioned artwork. There will also be opportunities to be interviewed, and feature in the commissioned work Quen will be producing.
Quen Took is a transgender and disabled novelist, poet, and zine-maker. They are published by Seaside Gothic and their zines and lectures have been presented globally in exhibitions about queerness, disability, horror, and folklore. Living in Gorton, Manchester, they are passionate about diverse communities & the stories they have to tell. They are an MA graduate of the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University, and will commence their PhD with MMU in 2024.
