The CL Spark Project
Please note this is a paid opportunity, and you can apply through Jobs 4 Students here.
This project aims to create a collection of informative and inspirational multimedia content that can be used to generate excitement around Manchester Met’s Carbon Literacy programme and to grab students’ attention at the outset of the Carbon Literacy training. By strengthening engagement with Carbon Literacy training, the Spark Team will play a key role in building climate awareness within the University and driving the low-carbon culture we need in order to address climate change, as well as contributing to the achievement of Man Met’s strategic commitment to embed Carbon Literacy training in all taught programmes by 2026. The full Project Brief can be found here.
The team’s primary goal will be to create a suite of video content promoting the benefits of Manchester Met’s Carbon Literacy training, but other forms of visual media (e.g. posters, web-based graphics) and written content will also be valuable. As such, this opportunity is of particular relevance to students with the skills and interests outlined in the job role descriptions below, although anyone seeking to be involved in climate change and sustainability issues is welcome and encouraged to apply.
The CL Spark Project is designed to be led primarily by the student members of the Spark Team, and they will be encouraged to make the project their own, harnessing their creativity and innovation. However, the team will receive guidance and supervision through regular meetings with the staff Project Manager, who will help set targets and offer support throughout the process. Ideal candidates for these roles will possess, or be keen to develop the following professional skills:
- Teamwork/collaboration
- Communication
- Creativity
- Time management
- Self-starters/ability to take the initiative
- Microsoft Office (particularly Word and Outlook)
Employment with the CL Spark Team is a paid opportunity, but successful applicants can also receive 300 Rise points (subject to level of engagement) that can count towards their degree.
Job Roles Available (flexible depending on pool of applicants):
Filmmakers
We are looking for film students or those with a knowledge of filmmaking to manage the direction, camera operation, editing, sound recording, storyboarding, and/or conduct of interviews for the video-based content produced through the Spark Project.
Researchers/writers
An opportunity for those with an interest in creative writing, marketing, communications, journalism, and/or research to lead on the preparation of voiceover scripts and interview questions, to conduct subject-specific background research, and to conduct interviews, whether on camera or in written form.
Graphic Designers
We seek students with skills or interest in graphic design and or/photography to produce visual material to promote Carbon Literacy training.
Decolonising the Curriculum (DtC) Focal Point
Responsible for overseeing the alignment of the Spark Project (and the Carbon Literacy training more broadly) with the Decolonising the Curriculum agenda. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in postcolonialism; racial, social & climate justice; and widening participation to spearhead a crucial element in making the training accessible and relevant to all.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Focal Point
Responsible for aligning the Spark Project and Carbon Literacy training with the wider ESD agenda. Embedding ESD into curricula is a strategic objective in our Leadership in Sustainability Strategy, alongside the University-wide rollout of Carbon Literacy training, and the purpose of the ESD Focal Point will be to lay the foundations for a future ‘ESD Spark Project’. This is an exploratory assignment with considerable flexibility, and will be of particular interest to those with an interest in international/sustainable development, international relations, and global citizenship.
Dates (Flexible)
The Spark Project is conceived to take place over summer 2024, but the actual timeline will be determined by the Project Team and Project Manager, depending on students’ availability. There may be scope for the initial stages to be conducted remotely (i.e. team members may not need to be in Manchester). Students can expect to work an average of 1-2 days a week for 1-2 months from June to August, but again, this will be determined according to availability.
Anyone interested in being part of this exciting initiative is highly encouraged to apply regardless of availability. In your application, please indicate which of the above role(s) you are interested in and give details of the dates you are not available.
