Design Residencies in Portugal Summer 2024
Castelo Branco, a region in Portugal renowned for its textile heritage, shares a special bond with Manchester through a friendship agreement. Supported by Castelo Branco municipality FÁBRICA DA CRIATIVIDADE, Man Met Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the UK Government Turing Fund, this residency programme is a product of this enduring relationship.
The Design Residency in Castelo Branco offers a fresh approach to fostering Design Practice at the Creative Factory in Portugal. Six Design Department students will embark on a one-month full-time residency in July 2024, focusing on developing their practice and building networks in Castelo Branco.
Each resident will produce a body of creative work, including a reflective report for exhibition in the Vertical Gallery MMU in Autumn 2024, contributing to the gallery’s international profile. Residents will have access to the factory’s co-working studio space and resources, providing them with the necessary time, space, freedom, and financial support to concentrate on developing their work post-graduation.

Students who study abroad develop a skill set that is valued by employers. Some skills and qualities are useful to develop to facilitate a successful experience.
1. Motivation: By living abroad, you will be taken outside of your comfort zone and may face a range of different challenges during your residency abroad journey. Key skills and qualities include resilience, organisation, flexibility, and patience. A positive attitude and commitment to success is important. To be selected for this programme, you need to demonstrate commitment to getting the most out of your experience. You will experience a different way of life whilst overseas, and you will need to deal with this with a positive attitude and pragmatism, whilst taking responsibility for your success. You will need to be a self-motivated and proactive individual with a collaborative and mature approach to your work and others.
2. Developing yourself: Taking part in a residency abroad provides a great opportunity to develop yourself personally, culturally, and academically.
