The Rise Team

Based in All Saints, the Rise team’s role is to create and curate Rise activities for students, and support staff and students in developing opportunities of their own within the Rise framework.

John Lean is the Programme Leader for Rise, and co-ordinates the team. He is the lead for Rise assessment processes, and also focuses on the impact and evaluation of Rise activities.

Sarah Maine is the Rise Operations Officer and administers the programme, including our budget.

Beyond this the team is made up of Experiential Learning Tutors (ELTs) who are aligned to specific faculties, and who also look after particular aspects and themes of the programme:

  • Matthew Carney is the ELT for Science and Engineering, and he has responsibility for Rise project-based learning opportunities, as well as sustainability.
  • Catherine Elkin is the ELT for Business and Law, and takes care of self-study packs and the ways in which students interact with the Rise website. Alongside this, she works to develop students digital and tech skills.
  • C-J Foster is the ELT for Health and Education, and develops student-originated and student-led activities. She also leads on Rise’s work around internationalisation.
  • Elle Simms is the ELT for Arts and Humanities, and organises opportunities for students to take part in volunteering and service learning. She also develops activities that enhance students’ skills around self-efficacy and personal effectiveness.

In addition, the Rise team is supported by a network of paid student staffers, both undergraduate and postgraduate, who act as a valuable student voice on Rise activities, and who are developing their own skills by contributing to the programme.

We also work closely with the Careers team to develop internships and other work-based learning opportunities. Adam Hugill is our Project and External Liaison Manager for this work.

If you want to contact Rise your first port of call should be the ELT attached to your faculty. Alternatively, you can use our group email address rise@mmu.ac.uk.
