Prepare: Task 2

Prepare: Task 2

Accent can play a big part in a person’s sense of identity.  How can we respect diversity of accents, step away from accentism and also ensure we make ourselves understood and communicate clearly?

By completing this activity you will hear a personal account of how one teacher modifies their regional accent to ensure understanding. You will also reflect on your own accent in preparation for discussing this in the workshop.

Accentism recording

Listen to an audio recording about how to modify regional accents to ensure understanding, without bending to ‘accentism’. Reflect on your own accent and suprasegmental features might mean for those with limited English using the template provided. Be prepared to discuss this in the workshop
