Introduction

This intensive introduces you to the complex but fascinating world of learning to read. In it, we explore how and when learning to read begins and develops to the point where readers are able to “go it alone”. We also look at the role of the supporting adult, how crucial this is in developing the motivation and enthusiasm for books and reading.

Reading is not a stand-alone process; it has complex connections with early language development, becoming a writer and engaging with the world and its people. As such we explore how reading enables the reader to empathise, view the world from a different perspective and appreciate other cultures. Upon completion of this unit, you should feel confident to begin to understand what goes on as part of the reading process and how to work with readers at various stages of their journey to independence. You should also be well on the way to becoming a skilled storyteller!
