Introduce: Task 1

Introduce: Task 1

This week we will focus on the concept of language as a ‘gatekeeper’. You will begin to recognise how language as a gatekeeping mechanism can be used to include or exclude individuals.

This week we will also introduce you to the final of our ‘languages of Greater Manchester’: Bengali.

Assessment focus 6 – Reflection and submission

For your assessment for this course, you will be asked to create an artefact which can be used to relay information about how to overcome language barriers in a setting of your choice.

You need to make sure you revise your artefact so that it is the best it can be.

Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Simplicity: coherence and cohesion. How accessible is your artefact? Is it easy to digest for the audience? Does it read well? Can it be followed easily?
  1. Peer feedback: collaborative learning – assess your process of learning, not just the product. Show your artefact to someone from the workshop and ask for feedback. Use this feedback to develop the artefact. You could also show it to colleagues to obtain their feedback on whether it is appropriate for your setting.
  1. Iteration: revisit old ideas from throughout the course and update your artefact accordingly, there may be something you have learnt in the past week or two that could be useful to include in your artefact.
  1. Expectations: check your artefact against the marking criteria. Does it meet the requirements?

HOW TO SUBMIT ASSESSMENT

You will need to submit your artefact using ‘Moodle’. Please click on this link:

Your assessment will go through a system called Turnitin which checks for plagiarism (resenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement)

Your deadline is Wednesday 1st March at 9:00pm (21.00).  Please make sure you submit in advance of this deadline.
