Environments & Experiences

Enabling environments play a crucial role in promoting physical development in the early years. These environments should be safe, stimulating, and adaptable to meet the diverse needs and abilities of young children.

Well designed environments include a range of materials and equipment, such as climbing frames, tricycles, building blocks, and sensory play areas, which invite children to challenge themselves physically while fostering independence and confidence. Enabling environments also promote inclusivity by ensuring all children, regardless of ability, have access to engaging physical activities that support their growth and development.

Offering both indoor and outdoor spaces allow children to explore, move and play in different ways.

Stop and Reflect: Use the following questions to explore how to create inclusive, creative environments that support physical development:

– How does the physical layout of your setting promote exploration and stimulation for all children?

– How could you ensure that both indoor and outdoor spaces encourage active play, creativity, and problem-solving?

– In what different ways could you adapt the environment to meet the diverse needs of children, including those with SEND or differing developmental levels?
