Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to building an intentionally inclusive culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We aim to be proactive—changing mindsets and embedding inclusion into everything we do, rather than reacting to issues as they arise.

This resource explores the challenges and barriers to inclusion in higher education and wider society. It invites you to reflect on the role you can play in making our Manchester Met community more welcoming for all.

We live in a society rich in diversity, and as a member of our University community we encourage you to reflect on the responsibility we all have to help each other thrive. By becoming more aware of your own identity and how it shapes your perspective, you’ll be better equipped to understand others—recognising both shared and differing experiences. This awareness helps build more meaningful relationships across backgrounds and identities.

The content will cover key topics such as inclusive language, the risks and impact of exclusion, and the behaviours we can adopt and promote to foster a stronger sense of belonging for everyone.

The University will, in the course of interpreting and implementing this resource, have due regard for its obligations to secure freedom of speech and academic freedom within the law for its students, staff and visiting speakers as described in the Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech.
