The ‘Wobble’ – Why feeling lost is normal

By Rachel Ajetunmobi, first year Psychology student

Being a fresher university is very exciting…until suddenly you’re no more a ‘fresher’ but an officially settled member of University. One moment you’re motivated and the next you’re questioning every decision you spent months deliberating on. We refer to this feeling as ‘the wobble’.

A wobble occurs when you feel stressed, uncertain or a bit overwhelmed, it kicks in when reality sets in and it’s completely normal to feel like this, it means you care enough about your future to really think if this is the best opportunity for you. You may feel like everyone but you has it figured out, but I promise you most of us are wobbling. We just hide it better, or push it all the way down.

I need you to know that a wobble doesn’t mean failure, it’s a pivotal moment when you realize that this is your life and you can…no….you need to take control. This is an important step, do not panic but instead be curious, research to your hearts desire. Think about the things you enjoy and what drains you? What are dealbreakers? What small steps can you take now? Really think about all of this.

Talk to tutors, lecturers, or support services such as Psychology Futures. There is also the Peer Guide system and the Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing service. Make sure to utilise all these services and professionals, as that is what your 9k tuition is for. Make sure to try new things and if you take anything out of this please please please be kind to youself – everyone makes mistakes, it’s part of the process and you will come out stronger than ever I promise you have faith in yourself, your abilities, your skills, you deserve to be here.

If you don’t have a plan how will you know you are going down the right path? You don’t have to have your whole life planned right now. Many of us are taking it day by day and that’s completely okay. If you feel lost, stressed or confused welcome to the wobble. It’s okay to visit but please do not dwell there, you’re not alone and you will find your way.
