Create a pitch and plan for a music video for Parlophone artist Rachel Chinouriri, and claim an opportunity to take your plans to a commissioner for Parlophone, who will choose one entry to take forward into production. You have been challenged to create a video for Rachel Chinouriri’s track ‘Through the Eye’. The management and label are after something that is ‘Experimental, high energy, unique!’ and have referenced Bonobo’s video for Kerala for inspiration. (Please don’t just emulate this but use it as a springboard for your own ideas development). This challenge will take part in three stages; all entries will receive 50 Rise points and the best will have the opportunity to take their plans through to production.

Stage One (Deadline: 8th Feb)

We expect you to work as a small team for this challenge (though only one of you will submit). Once you've pulled together your production team, listened to the song, and given some attention to the video that the client has shared for inspiration, you should pull together a basic concept in an image and no more than 100 words. Share your idea on padlet, and offer feedback on other people's ideas. Do you want to collaborate across programmes? Make that clear on your post and perhaps you can recruit additional team.

Stage Two (Deadline: 16th Feb)

Develop your idea into a full treatment. How do you get your idea across? Remember to be ambitious but also realistic - please refer to Sam Seager's talk on what makes a good treatment. Keep in mind two important things:
  • The production window - the time to shoot this - is very short, please bear this in mind when pitching and make consider the timeframe you need to be able to turn this around in.
  • Filming during the pandemic. Utmost attention needs to be given to current restrictions and how you can work legally and effectively within this. See current regulations for music video production here and note that filming will be subject to adhering with MMU Health and Safety policy and government guidelines at the time of production.
One member of your team should create a project challenge response using the button at the top of this page. The first line of your submission should contain all the names and student IDs of the contributing team. Remember, there are limits to what you can submit - a single wordpress post through this site. You can't do fancy uploads and have limited formatting, but you can embed assets as you would in any webpage. Each member of the team will receive 50 Rise Points for submission of their response.

Stage Three

Following submission one proposal will be picked by Sam Seager, commissioner for Parlophone, to take forward into production. The chosen entry will get to direct and produce the video for Rachel Chinouriri and receive a prize from Blackmagic Design! Production will begin in February, with support being given by Filmmaking staff and Warner to develop the production and manage the timeline. You'll have to deliver your completed work in March. The turnaround will be tight, so please keep this in mind as you develop your ideas.
