Ellie’s Placement year story as a Researcher at the HMRC

During my placement year, I worked as an Associate User Researcher at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). My role involved supporting Senior User researchers to conduct research that explored how people interact with digital government services. Some of my daily tasks involved creating research plans and recruitment briefs, assisting in conducting interviews, creating surveys and analysing qualitative data to identify patterns in user behaviour. I was drawn to the role of User research as I knew I would develop transferable skills throughout the year such as research design, data analysis, and communicating insights — all of which I knew would be valuable for my final year dissertation. I was also passionate about working in the Civil Service as it offered the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that have a real impact on society. It was fascinating to see how research insights directly shaped the way services are designed and improved.

As a Psychology student, I found certain skills and knowledge I learned at university such as ethical research practice, active listening, and data analysis were directly relevant in the field of User research. I also developed new skills and abilities such as collaborating with designers, presenting findings to stakeholders, and managing projects independently.

The placement gave me real confidence in my research abilities and showed me how a psychology degree can be applied to multiple different career routes other than a typical clinical route. I would encourage anyone that is interested in pursuing a placement year to go for it- It is an incredible opportunity to grow personally and professionally while bringing your learning to life.
