All Things Green!

Beth Fulham Rise Communications and Copywriter

As it’s time to sunbathe in Piccadilly Gardens, and the weather is perfect for an al fresco coffee, it’s also time to talk about all things green! From celebrating students and their green fingers, to the best ways the crisp outside can improve your mental health, we are highlighting all things green for students.

The RHS Garden Show

At the end of March, Rise students volunteered to design and create four exhibits that took centre stage at the Mayfield Depot. The project started two months ago with a brief from Jason Williams to design and build four balcony gardens. Each garden built to cater to specific circumstance and personality with a budget of only £500 (turns out show plants are expensive!). The students took this challenge and ran with it, and the results were brilliant! The project generated a huge amount of interest and was featured in The Manchester Evening News, The One Show, and aAh! magazine!

Matt Carney, the Rise leader of this project, has said “My favourite moment of the project has to be working with our students to jury-rig a pond with a plant pot, a compost bag, sealant, and a few pennies at 8pm twelve hours before the start of the show”

Nature and Mental Health

Mind, a mental health service, agree in saying “spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing”. Here at Rise, we care for your wellbeing so here are three things you can do outside to look after your brain:

  1. Go for a walk. There are many spots in Manchester where you can go for a walk with a view. Hulme Park is not that far from campus and is a great, large spot of nature. This park also has a tennis court, and skate park if you want to make it group trip!
  2. Breathe. Fresh air not only cleans your lungs, it can also boost your mood, lower your heart rate, increase energy levels and even improve digestion. All Saints park is reopening this month – grab a book from the library, or bring your airpods and let your lungs get a taste of fresh, spring air.
  3. Take photos. Update your instagram feed with some unique pictures of nature, flowers, and the shining sun. Make a challenge with yourself and see how many different flowers you can snap. Want to make it a group occasion? Search for a stylish spot and have an outside photoshoot with your friends.
