Take a trip to Northern Ireland for the Big Sustainable Innovation Challenge

4th June to 6th June
Join Manchester Met and students from other universities as we travel to Northern Ireland to undertake the Big Sustainable Innovation Challenge in partnership with the R&A. Please note expression of interest for this activity have now closed.

Thank you to those that have registered interest in this event. An application form will be sent out on Monday the 14th of April and you will have seven days until the 21st of April to complete the form.

Please check you meet the following criteria before you apply:

  • You have a passport or driving licence and can travel to Northern Ireland. 
  • You have at least 6 months remaining until your passport expires. 
  • You are free to travel from the morning of Wednesday 4 June to the evening of Friday 6 June. 

Sport and leisure are an important part of good health and well-being. However, we need to make sure our activities aren’t hurting other areas of sustainability. This innovation challenge tasks you to bring your sustainable knowledge and motivation to support the sustainable delivery of large sports and tourist events with the R&A, the leading body in the world of golf. Find out more about the R&A and their sustainability efforts here. 

What role can golf courses play in protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change? How can tourism and hospitality have a positive impact on society and culture? How can we shape our sports so they can be enjoyed by future generations? 

We want students from all subjects, levels, and experience to help us answer these questions!  

What’s in it for you:

Dates: Wednesday 4th June – Friday 6th June 2025. 

Where: Belfast & Portrush, Northern Ireland. 

What to expect: 

Day 1: Arrive in Portrush to a warm welcome from the R&A. Engage in icebreaker and team-building activities with your peers and receive your challenge briefing. Enjoy dinner followed by collaborative idea generation. 

Day 2: Engage in dynamic sessions to generate and refine your ideas with expert guidance. You’ll explore business tools, receive feedback from industry leaders, and perfect your pitch to stand out in the competition. Take part in an evening of pitches, awards, and a celebratory event. 

Day 3: Take the morning to relax before heading back to Manchester with new skills and connections  

What’s Covered: Flights, accommodation, and some meals included.
