Place and Coming of Age: Filmmaking Research Workshops
This project gives you the opportunity to gain experience working on a live research project in a real-world environment– offering valuable insight to those students interested in pursuing research pathways in their future studies. The research project aims to investigate emerging trends within documentary filmmaking and contribute to the development of contemporary documentary filmmaking methodologies. Such methodologies will be used to engage collaboratively with participants to explore localised social issues alongside themes of personal identity as linked to place, with a case study based in the North Midlands (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire).
A number of short films are being produced collaboratively with participants as part of the overall research project. The one you would be working on aims to work with participants aged 16-19 in post-16/FE settings to explore their relationship with the area in which they’ve grown up, and what impact this relationship might have on their lives as they enter adulthood. Together, we will facilitate a series of workshops which encourage participants to explore these themes through engaging with collaborative filmmaking methods. Broadly speaking, these methods involve elements of creative writing, instructional filmmaking and performance, the result of which will contribute to some form of filmic output.
As the project research assistant, you will help facilitate these practical workshops. This will entail assisting with filming and sound recording, contributing to discussions and supporting participants in their creative practice. You will also be also to gain experience in film editing, working with the project lead to produce a short, experimental film as a final project output, which is intended to be screened publicly. Some basic experience with filmmaking practice is required.
