How to define & communicate YOUR needs while enhancing YOUR entrepreneurship skills

19th February 13:15 to 15:00
This event offers students the chance to connect with like-minded individuals. A safe and inclusive space where experiences are shared and discussions facilitated around inclusivity and developing a sense of self, during and post education.
Effectively YOU: A programme of self study, workshops, and active sessions to support your development. We want you to build your personal confidence and self effectiveness from the inside, outward! So you can share your story with pride, and know your value in the world.

Whether you hope to set up your own business, work freelance, or find a professional job role after graduation, the ability to ask for what you need, so you can feel safe and able to engage, will make you both more employable, and safe and secure in your future roles. This workshop will support you to learn how to identify your needs, how to set boundaries, and consider ways to build these into future endeavours.

My name is Jamie and I am a creative practitioner and business owner based in Salford. I am a neurodivergent, disabled and queer woman. I have had my fair share of experiences of feeling like I don’t fit in or have felt like an “other” in both my personal and work life. Over the past three years of developing my business, I have learned how to support myself effectively, allowing me to utilise my energy and niche skills efficiently.

I have designed this workshop to share my experience as a Manchester Met graduate and the journey I have taken to run a sustainable business while considering my access needs, setting boundaries with employers, and taking care of my wellbeing.

In the workshop, there will be:

  • Engagement stickers (more details below).
  • A neurodivergent accessible icebreaker.
  • A short talk about Jamie’s Career Journey.
  • Jamie’s experience with accessibility in the workplace, boundaries and caring for her well-being.
  • An activity focused on the value of niche interests and highlighting your excellence.

During this session you will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions to a Manchester Met alumnus student. You will receive a resource pack and will have time after the workshop for one-on-one conversations with the practitioner.

There is no expectation!

There is no expectation to engage in any specific way during the workshop. We will have engagement stickers available to help relieve any pressure to participate. If you are wearing a red sticker, we’ll understand that you’re here to listen and not socially engage, and that’s perfectly okay.

No diagnosis is required to attend this workshop. If you have ever felt like an “other” or if you believe that society is structured in a way that doesn’t suit you, please feel free to join us.

*Engagement stickers:

Red – I prefer not to be approached. I may start a conversation with you if I feel comfortable.

Orange – I may start a conversation with you but I might prefer it if you start the conversation.

Green – I am happy to speak with others and you can approach me to start a conversation.
