Greater Manchester Student Hackathon: Innovating for a Greener Future

19th November 08:30 to 17:00
Care about climate change? Love Manchester? Want to build a better future? Join us for this full day event where you can bring your ideas, work together and have fun solving problems with other students to make Manchester a greener place. Plus, win £200!

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, Manchester Met have teamed up with the University of Manchester to build a greener and more sustainable Manchester city. We need your help. Whether you are studying finance or fashion, develop your creative ideas to help improve the world.

You will get a free lunch on the day to keep you fuelled and focused.

The winning team will receive a tote bag of goodies, 3 months free access to the Generator workspace, and a £200 cash prize!

This event will be taking place at Generator in Ancoats, and a coach will pick up attendees from campus at 8:30am to take you to the venue, and return to campus at 5:30pm.

Greater Manchester faces a number of challenges that we need your help with:

  1. Mitigating Climate Change – We generate significant CO2 emissions, which equate to about 3.6% of total UK annual CO2 emissions and contribute to global climate change.
  2. Air Quality – Local air pollution causes significant harm to our health and environment and, as a result, has an adverse impact on us and our economy.
  3. Production and Consumption of Resources – The products and goods we consume and the waste produced after their use has a significant impact on our local environment and on CO2 emissions produced inside and outside of the city region.
  4. Our Natural Environment – More action and investment is needed to protect, maintain and enhance our natural environment, so that we see a “net gain” rather than a “net loss” in the services it provides.
  5. Resilience and Adaptation – We need to increase our city’s resilience and adapt to the impacts that unavoidable climate change will increasingly have on us.

Join us for this full day hackathon where you can bring your ideas, work together and have fun solving problems with other students to make Manchester a greener place.
