Hosted by Sarah Cleave, Lecturer in Publishing at Manchester Met, this event brings together early career professionals from across the publishing industry. Whether you’re interested in editorial, marketing, or digital roles, this session will give you clarity on what publishing careers look like and how to get started. You’ll also learn more about Manchester Met’s MA Publishing programme and how it could be your next step.
About the guest speakers
Adam Noor is the Studio Co-Ordinator at Octopus Books where he manages the admin needs of the design department. In 2024, Adam took part in Hachette UK’s Traineeship Scheme where he worked with the editorial and design teams at Little, Brown Book Group. He has a Publishing MA from Manchester Metropolitan University.
Harriet Hirshman has 10+ years’ experience in the publishing industry. Her early roles included interning at The Edge Hill Short Story Prize, before securing her first full-time role at a non-fiction publisher called Crécy Publishing. She joined Dead Ink in 2022 and is now the publishing manager. Her role includes commissioning, editorial, production and rights.
Becca Parkinson is Senior Marketing Coordinator at Manchester University Press, where she looks after marketing and publicity for their growing trade non-fiction list. She was Engagement Manager at Comma Press for five years and previously served as Secretary and then Chair of the Society of Young Publishers North branch (2017-2019). She has been a Trustee of Manchester Literature Festival since 2021.
