Training: Improving cultural intelligence

3rd March 11:30 to 13:00
Working with an external trainer. Please be aware that the title of this session has changed to reflect the content - the trainer is the same.
This activity is offered as part of Go Global - an exciting set of activities, allowing students to engage in an international experience. Are you having problems signing up to this event? Email GGW6@mmu.ac.uk and we will try to fix the issue for you.

Cultural Competency is part of the quadrant of improving cultural intelligence. This training is different from Manchester Metropolitan’s course called ‘ Training: Becoming Culturally Competent’.

Cultural competency refers to the ability of individuals and organisations to work effectively, respectfully, and ethically across cultural contexts. In professional and educational settings, it encompasses:

  • Cultural awareness – recognising one’s own cultural lens and biases.
  • Cultural knowledge – understanding the histories, values, communication styles, and social realities of different cultural groups.
  • Cultural skills – adapting behaviours, policies, and practices to ensure inclusivity and equity.
  • Cultural humility – maintaining an ongoing commitment to learning and self-reflection.

In contemporary practice, cultural competency moves beyond symbolic inclusion toward structural change, embedding Indigenous perspectives, addressing systemic inequities, and fostering culturally safe environments.
