AI Session 3 - Ethics of AI: Understanding Bias, Professional Impact & Sustainability

25th March 11:00 to 13:00
Join Matt Thorpe, Health and Education AI Faculty Lead, at this interactive workshop exploring the ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence in Health and Education. Discover key challenges such as bias, professional impact, and sustainability, and gain the confidence to engage with AI responsibly.

Students who complete all three sessions in this AI series will receive a Responsible AI Engagement Certificate and a total of 150 Rise points (40 points per session plus a 30-point bonus). This recognises your understanding of key ethical issues and responsible engagement with AI and adds significant value to your professional development.

This session will take place in an IT room with computers available for use; however, students are welcome to bring their own laptops or tablets if they prefer.

This thought-provoking session explores the ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on how these issues affect the health and education sectors. Led by Matt Thorpe, Health and Education AI Faculty Lead, the workshop examines three core ethical challenges: bias in AI systems, which can reinforce inequalities or misrepresent individuals and communities; de-professionalisation and deskilling, where over-reliance on AI risks undermining professional judgement, autonomy and human relationships; and the environmental impact of AI, including the energy, water and materials required to train and operate large models. We will also consider wider ethical concerns such as data privacy and consent, intellectual property, accessibility and inequity of access, and the societal consequences of rapid AI adoption. The session aims to equip attendees with the awareness and confidence to engage with AI responsibly.
