Brief

We are seeking a passionate and talented media team to join aAh! Magazine to cover the 16-Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Festival taking place 25 November – 10 December, 2024.

This event presents an opportunity for students interested in journalism, photography, videography and social media to contribute their skills towards an impactful cause, while building a public-facing portfolio.

Working with a diverse group of students from across the university, you will join a team reporting on the festival, interviewing organisers, speakers and attendees and covering live events.

The Festival

The 16-Days of Activism is an international campaign running from 25 November to 10 December, 2024, dedicated to raising awareness and combating gender-based violence. This year, Manchester Met is hosting a series of events featuring poets, activists, and academics including Everyday Sexism founder Laura Bates, author and psychoanalyst Katharine Angel, and poet and playwright Joelle Taylor.

Throughout the 16 days, the university will host poetry readings, panel discussions and workshops, all focused on exploring how poetry and the arts can create transformational social change.

From powerful spoken-word performances to in-depth conversations, the festival is designed to amplify voices fighting against gender-based violence and highlight the critical role of creativity in activism.

aAh! Magazine will provide full media coverage of the festival, assembling a dedicated team of students to help deliver engaging, creative, and inspiring content across multiple platforms.

Roles:

We are looking to recruit students across the following areas:

  • Journalists – to produce event previews, conduct interviews and report on the live events
  • Photographers – to visually document the events and community spirit of the festival
  • Videographers – to capture and edit video content, including interviews and live events
  • Social Media Creators – to generate real-time content that promotes the festival and engages with our audience

Whether you are an experienced media creator or looking to build new skills, this is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a meaningful project, develop your portfolio and gain real-world experience.

How to get involved:

To express your interest in joining the aAh! Magazine 16-Days of Activism Festival Media Team, please complete the expression of interest form.

Selected students will be invited to a workshop and briefing session to prepare for their roles.

Project Timeline:

  • Induction & Workshop – October 2024: Students who register will participate in an introductory session, where you’ll be briefed on your roles and receive guidance on how to produce high-quality content.
  • Preview Festival coverage – October-November 2024: In the run-up to the festival, you will produce preview content to promote the events including interviews with speakers.
  • Live Festival Coverage – 25 November-10 December 2024: You’ll contribute to covering various events over the 16-day campaign. Please note: you don’t need to be available for every day of the festival.
