50 Years of Psychology

6th November 12:00 to 16:00
Join us for a special celebration marking 50 Years of Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, recently named Modern University of the Year. Hosted by the School of Psychology, this exciting event will feature interactive activities, thought-provoking discussions, and a keynote address by our special guest speaker, Kate Silverton.

Kate Silverton is a former BBC broadcaster and newsreader who made a bold and inspiring career change in 2021 to become a qualified child therapist. She now works with children and families, drawing on her training in child psychology. Kate is also the author of the best-selling book There’s No Such Thing as Naughty, which offers a compassionate, neuroscience-based approach to understanding children’s behaviour.

Session Outline:

· Keynote Speech by Kate Silverton reflecting on her career change and contributions to the field of child psychology

· Panel Discussion exploring what the next 50 years of psychology might look like, with a range of guest panellists including:

o Dr Jon Sutton – Head of Science Communication at the British Psychological Society and Editor of The Psychologist

o Andy Spinoza – Journalist and author of Manchester Unspun which tells the four-decades story of the swaggering new city and the role of culture in the process.

o Professor Niki Ray – Neuroscientist specialising working on pioneering research into deep brain stimulation and Parkinson’s disease

This promises to be a vibrant and inspiring afternoon, bringing together experts, alumni, students, and friends of the university to celebrate our legacy and look ahead to the future.
